| Ole' Stinky here thinks I weave real slow. |
When I'm talking to someone about how I make my scarves (describing warp-painting, the rinsing and multiple attachings, unattachings and re-atachings of the warp to the loom, the weaving itself, the over-dyeing), the question "And how long did all that take you?" will inevitably follow my tiresomely technical soliloquy. To this day, I am still unable to answer this question with any real accuracy. I've guessed 15-20 hours on the most involved scarves, hoping to overestimate (because if I'm not, I might really be working in my own private sweatshop). Today, finally, I am ready to discover the truth, so that in the future I won't be guessing the quantity of labor invested in each scarf. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised...but I'm rather nervous that my current guesstimate is either accurate (and I can live with that), or (gasp) too low. We shall see. But please stay tuned, because tracking labor means it's time for another exciting Process Series on the blog...chronicled from start to finish on my next batch of scarves...and I'll have the stopwatch out the whole time. Get ready for some brutal honesty.
Brave woman you! It's always frightening to measure how long our work takes. I cringe everytime the measuring tape comes out.
